If you're considering giving customers a fire-starting device, safety should be on your radar. Here's what dispensary owners need to know about the safety profile of solar lighters, how they compare to butane alternatives, and how to protect your business.

How safe are they compared to butane?

Solar lighters are, by most measures, safer than butane lighters. They contain no pressurized gas (butane lighters can leak or explode in extreme heat). They produce no open flame on their own — they create a focused hot point only when actively held in direct sunlight at the correct angle. They can't accidentally ignite in a pocket, purse, or drawer the way a butane lighter can if the valve sticks.

The primary risk is focused sunlight causing burns or igniting materials unintentionally. This requires the lens to be in direct sun at a specific focal distance — it doesn't happen passively. When stored in a wallet or pocket (away from direct sun), the lens is completely inert.

Liability considerations

Any fire-starting product carries some liability. For butane lighters, this is well-established and generally covered by the manufacturer's insurance. For solar lighters as a newer product category, the liability landscape is less established but the risk profile is arguably lower.

We recommend three things for dispensaries distributing solar lighters. First, include a brief safety card with each lighter. We provide these to our wholesale customers. Second, include a product disclaimer in your terms of service. Third, check whether your existing business liability insurance covers promotional product distribution — most general liability policies do, but it's worth confirming.

Age appropriateness

Solar lighters are fire-starting devices and should be distributed to adults only. This aligns with dispensary operations since customers are already age-verified. However, if you're including them in take-home bags, consider that the bags may be accessible to children at home. A "not a toy — adult use only" notice on the packaging or sleeve is a simple precaution.

Recommended safety language

For in-store and on-packaging use, we recommend language along these lines: "This solar lighter concentrates sunlight to create heat. Use in direct sunlight only. Do not leave focused in sunlight unattended. Keep away from children. For adult use only." We provide customizable safety cards and sleeve inserts to our wholesale customers at no additional cost.
