Not all dispensary merch is created equal. We ranked the seven most common promotional items by the metric that actually matters — return on investment. Not just unit cost. Not just perceived value. Total ROI, factoring in cost per impression, customer retention, word-of-mouth potential, and lifespan.

Here's the ranking, with our reasoning.

1

☀ Solar Lighters

$1.20–$2.50/unit · Indefinite lifespan · Wallet carry · ~540 impressions per unit over 6 months. The math is hard to beat: low cost, infinite lifespan, daily carry, and high novelty factor that drives word-of-mouth. The sunlight limitation is real but doesn't impact the brand-impression ROI. 2

Custom Branded Lighters

$0.80–$2.50/unit · 2–4 week lifespan · Pocket carry · ~63 impressions per unit. The classic for a reason. Universal utility, daily carry, and the cheapest entry point for a functional item. Loses to solar on lifespan and cost-per-impression, but wins on all-weather reliability.

3

Grinders

$4.00–$8.00/unit · Years lifespan · Home use · High perceived value. The premium play. Customers perceive $15–20 value on a $5 item. Best used as a loyalty reward rather than mass giveaway. Excellent retention but limited to home impressions.

4

Stash Jars

$2.00–$5.00/unit · Months–years · Home use · Functional and attractive. A quality glass jar with UV protection and your logo serves a genuine purpose. Customers keep them on their shelf where guests see them. Good for brand visibility at home, but no pocket carry.

5

Rolling Trays

$3.00–$7.00/unit · Years · Home use · Large design canvas. The artistic option. Trays let you go big on design — detailed illustrations, bold colors, limited-edition art. Customers display them. Great for brand identity, less great for cost-per-impression math due to limited daily exposure.

6

Custom Rolling Papers

$0.50–$1.50/pack · Consumable · Sometimes carried · Low cost, natural fit. Papers are the most on-brand consumable for dispensaries. They get used, which means customers come back for more. But they're gone in days — no long-term impressions. Best as a Tier 3 bag-stuffer.

7

Stickers

$0.15–$0.40/unit · Weeks–months · Not carried · The cheapest option. Stickers have their place — brand awareness, laptop/water bottle decoration, kid-friendly vibes for non-cannabis contexts. But they're passive, non-functional, and easily ignored. Supplement, not strategy.

How we ranked them

Our ranking weights four factors: cost per impression (40% weight — the most objective measure of ROI), daily carry potential (25% — items on your person generate fundamentally different impressions than items at home), word-of-mouth factor (20% — how likely customers are to show someone and mention your shop), and perceived value (15% — how generous the item feels relative to what you paid).

Different dispensaries will weigh these factors differently. If you have a luxury brand identity, grinders and rolling trays might rank higher for you. If you're optimizing purely for impressions-per-dollar, solar lighters and branded lighters dominate. Use our budget calculator to model your specific scenario.

The smart play: don't pick just one

The highest-performing dispensaries use a tiered approach. A daily-carry hero item (solar lighter or branded lighter) as the primary impression driver, a premium item (grinder or tray) as a loyalty reward, and a low-cost consumable (papers, hemp wick, stickers) in every bag.
